Gas safety

Inspections, testing and gas safety records for commercial and school gas installations, with defects explained and put right.

Overview

Gas safety across London and the South East

If you're responsible for a building with gas, the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 require its appliances, pipework and flues to be kept safe. In practice that means regular inspection by Gas Safe registered engineers with the right commercial qualifications, and written records to show it has been done. CommGas (Gas Safe Register no. 547924) carries out this work for schools, offices, care homes, hotels, healthcare buildings and other commercial premises across London and the South East.

A gas safety inspection covers the appliances, the installation pipework, ventilation and flues. Depending on the site, it can include a tightness test of the installation, checks on emergency isolation and safety interlocks, and inspection of catering and laboratory gas. You get a commercial gas safety record, and any unsafe situation is explained, recorded and made safe in line with the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure.

Kitchens and laboratories

Commercial kitchens need the gas supply interlocked with the extract ventilation, so appliances can't run without it. School and college laboratories need emergency isolation that staff can reach, and installations that are tested regularly under IGEM/UP/11. We check, repair and upgrade both.

Keeping the records

Keep gas safety records with your other compliance records. Insurers, auditors and enforcing authorities can ask to see them, and a full set makes it easier to show the installation has been looked after, especially when responsibility passes between facilities teams or contractors.

For facilities managers

We can carry out inspections across your sites on a schedule, keep the records together and give you a priced list of remedial works, so nothing is left open.

For schools and bursars

We plan inspections and any shutdowns around the school day and term dates, and follow your safeguarding and signing-in procedures. Our guide to gas safety in schools, linked on this page, covers what bursars and site managers need to know.

For main contractors

On refurbishments we can survey and test the existing installation before works start, then test and certificate alterations at the end.

Frequently asked questions

How often do we need a gas safety inspection?

For most commercial premises, appliances should be serviced and the installation checked at least once a year. Your engineer can recommend a schedule based on the site.

What happens if you find something unsafe?

We explain it, record it on the gas safety record and make it safe in line with the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure. We then give you a price to put it right.

Do you check school lab and kitchen gas?

Yes. We inspect and test laboratory installations to IGEM/UP/11 and check catering interlocks and ventilation.
